According to reports from the Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA), the financial strain on households has reached a point where even seemingly worthless items are being turned into quick cash.
Online classified platforms in Iran have seen an unprecedented spike in listings for second-hand goods, including:
• Natural Hair: Driven by the wig and hair extension market, individuals are selling their long locks. Prices vary significantly—reaching thousands of Iranian rials—depending on length, color, and quality.
• Used Fragrance Bottles: Empty or partially used perfume bottles are being auctioned off online.
• Pre-owned Apparel: Basic necessities like worn clothing and functional work shoes are being bundled together to lure budget-conscious buyers.
• Tech Rentals: Laptops, once viewed strictly as long-term personal investments, are now being leased out short-term for students attending online classes or professionals needing remote work setups.
"When prices rise far faster than household incomes, basic survival comes down to micro-decisions—buying less, delaying purchases, selling whatever is left, and renting instead of owning," local analysts note.
Inflation Hits Record Highs
Data from the Statistical Center of Iran highlights the stark reality facing citizens. By the end of July, annual inflation surged to 66%, with point-to-point (year-over-year) inflation climbing to a staggering 87.9%.
The impact is no longer confined to luxury markets; it directly threatens basic food security and essential healthcare. To cope with skyrocketing medical costs, an increasing number of families are asking pharmacies and clinics for installment-based payment plans for essential medicines.
